Builderscrack vs NoCowboys vs running your own ads: what New Zealand tradies pay for a lead (2026)

Builderscrack tokens, NoCowboys' flat annual fee, Bark credits and your own Google and Meta ads compared in New Zealand dollars, with sourced prices and honest notes on where each one wins.

The three models New Zealand tradies choose between

There are really only three ways to pay for leads in New Zealand: a job board that charges per connection (Builderscrack, Bark), a directory that charges a flat fee for a profile (NoCowboys), or your own advertising where you pay Google and Meta directly and every enquiry is yours. Each has a price the platform or its reviewers publish, and each has a catch.

Builderscrack matters more than it used to: it has been owned by Australia's hipages since December 2021 and moved to a full subscription-plus-tokens model in 2024, so the economics now look like hipages' — a monthly plan, then tokens to connect on each job, with the homeowner hearing from several tradies.

What your own ads cost per lead in New Zealand

New Zealand clicks are cheap by international standards — trade search terms are reported at NZ$3–15 per click — but leads are not, because volume is low: agencies report NZ$70–145 per Google Search lead for plumbers and electricians, with conversion rates of 12–16% on emergency jobs. Meta lead-form campaigns for tradies are reported at NZ$15–35 per lead, sometimes under NZ$20, which is why Meta is usually the first channel we switch on for planned work like building and landscaping.

A useful sanity check: Builderscrack's Standard plan plus a hundred tokens is NZ$99 a month before you win anything, and each connection then costs tokens while three or four other tradies are quoting. The same NZ$99 a month in your own Meta account at NZ$25 a lead is four exclusive enquiries — and your ad account keeps its learning if you scale up.

Where Builderscrack and NoCowboys are genuinely better

Builderscrack has the audience. A new builder with no reviews will get work from it faster than from a cold ad account. NoCowboys' strength is different: its profile pages rank well for a business-name search, so a strong NoCowboys page is a good defensive move whatever else you do — it is a review site more than a lead source, and NZ$999 a year for that can be fair value.
